The Safe and Sound Protocol might suit you or your child if you:

  • often experience sensory overload
  • find yourself being extra sensitive to noise (see case study
  • have tried other stress management techniques (such as mindfulness or noise-blocking earplugs), but are still stressed and anxious
  • have been diagnosed with Long Covid (see case study)

Suitable for both adults and children, The SSP can be helpful for those who experience anxiety, sensory processing disorder or sensory meltdowns, or have diagnoses of depression, autism, ADHD.

However, you don't have to have had a diagnosis in order to benefit from The Safe and Sound Protocol.

Based in Polyvagal Theory (Dr Stephen Porges), The Safe and Sound Protocol can help get your nervous system out of "stuck" mode or fight/flight mode.

You will then be able to continue with your roles in life feeling more grounded, calm, and less stressed or irritable.

FAQ ABOUT THE SAFE AND SOUND PROTOCOL

Are your questions answered here? We hope so! Please book a call to discuss your specific situation with us further.

How long does each session go for?

The TOTAL amount of listening is 5 hours, but the length of time to get through the programme is dependent on the individual.

The length of each session of listening is decided on our initial consult. Most people will listen for approx 15-20 mins each session.

What does the music sound like?

There are a variety of playlists, including popular songs and one of classical music. The music sounds slightly different to normal, as it has been specially filtered to "retune" the middle ear muscles.

There are different playlists for children and adults.

Can my child go through The SSP?

Yes, The SSP is suitable for children age 2+.

When we deliver The SSP to children, we take a "parent coaching" model with your family. Our role is to support and educate you as the parent, as you support your child throughout the process of taking them through The SSP.

Please book a discovery call to discuss whether it will be suitable for your specific family/whanau.

Can my child go through The SSP if they're already in therapy?

Yes, The SSP is intended to supplement and enhance achievement in existing therapy goals.

For example, your child might be seeing an occupational therapist for sensory regulation. The SSP can help "create space" in your child's nervous system in order to help them feel safe in themselves. There are many case studies of using The SPP alongside other therapies. See this website for more.

I would like to go through The SSP with my child, is that possible?

It may work best if you go through it first, prior to you child going through it.

We offer a discounted rate for multiple members of the same family accessing The SSP.

I've never heard of this before and it sounds really odd, does it work?

At Connect Occupational Therapy we are focused on providing best practice and evidence based care.

The SSP is a therapy that works from the "bottom up" to regulate the nervous system, so that then other strategies (e.g. talk therapy, routine management, and mindfulness) can then be more successful.

We are finding that our clients feel calmer, more connected to their bodies, are more confident, have more patience with their kids, are less sensitive to noise, and have more capacity for stress in their life.

There are case studies and research on the Unyte iLs website should you wish to find out more.

Can I access this if I live elsewhere in Aotearoa?

Yes! The Safe and Sound Protocol can be delivered remotely, as it's accessed through an app on your phone. This means it's easily available even if you don't live in the same city as Connect Occupational Therapy!

We have found that this suits clients well as it means they can do their listening at a time of day/week when it suits them best.

You have regular contact with Connect Occupational Therapy via WhatsApp and video calls. Co-regulation is an important part of ensuring SSP success, which we support you with.

After you go through The SSP remotely, we recommend you continue to get support through a a mental health therapist, because The SSP is intended to be a precursor to ongoing therapy.

I've got a diagnosis of PTSD, experienced birth trauma, or have a sensitive claim through ACC. Is this for me?

If you are in current therapy or are planning to access therapy, then The SSP can support your recovery alongside that.

Due to the co-regulation aspect required in The SSP, Connect Occupational Therapy can support you in person to go through The SSP if you are located in Otautahi Christchurch.

If you are located elsewhere, then it would be more suitable for you to contact a provider in your location.

I'm a preschool teacher/teacher and have children in my class who experience dysregulation and struggle to engage. Could The SSP help them?

The SSP would possibly help the child's nervous system go from being in fight/flight/flee, to feeling more of a sense of internal safety and social engagement.

Dysregulation can stem from a variety of reasons, and we would want to know more about what is going on in the child's life and how the parent is going.

The SSP may be a good place for the family to start addressing the root cause of dysregulation. Please feel free to suggest the parent look into it with us.

Welcome, you're in the right place.

Connect Occupational Therapy breathes positive energy into weary families by equipping parents with sensory tools, independent play, and connected parenting.
